How I Scored 95 in ICSE Class 10 Literature English: My Secret Revealed

Scoring high in ICSE English Literature isn’t just about memorizing summaries or writing long answers—it’s about showing the examiner that you actually read and understood the text. When I scored 95 in ICSE 2022, it was because I focused on reading the prescribed texts carefully. Back then, it was The Merchant of Venice and The Treasure Trove. For ICSE 2026 onwards, The Treasure Trove has been replaced by Treasure Chest, but the principle remains the same: quoting directly from the text impresses the examiner far more than paraphrasing.

A strong understanding of the themes, character motivations, and plot, combined with one precise line quoted from the textbook, can make your answer stand out. For instance, even one well-chosen line shows that you have read the book, and that alone can earn extra marks in the literature section.

I also relied heavily on my workbook and extra resources, like online videos from the Study with Sudhir YouTube channel, which helped me understand the themes and tricky questions better. Remember, English in ICSE is all about demonstrating comprehension, insight, and clarity—MCQs might be tricky, but the written paper rewards those who can analyze and quote wisely.

My advice to future ICSE students aiming for top marks:

  1. Read the text thoroughly – don’t just skim.

  2. Pick at least one strong quote per answer – even a single line can impress.

  3. Understand the themes – use school workbooks and trusted online resources.

  4. Practice writing answers – clarity and structure matter.

Even if semester exams or MCQs trip you up, the written paper is where you can truly shine. With the right preparation, quoting from the text, and deep thematic understanding, scoring close to 100 is absolutely achievable.
