Raigad Fort Travel Blog: My Personal Journey to the Capital of Swarajya By Harshal Bane
There are some places you don’t just visit—you experience them. My trip to Raigad Fort was exactly that. More than just a trek or sightseeing spot, it felt like stepping into history, into the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The Journey Begins
Located in the Raigad district, the fort stands tall in the Sahyadri mountains. Reaching the base itself builds excitement, but the real experience starts when you begin the climb.
I chose to go the traditional way—climbing the steps. It was tiring, no doubt, but every step felt worth it. For those who prefer an easier route, there is also a ropeway option available.
Climbing Into History
As I climbed higher, the views kept getting better. The greenery, the fresh air, and the silence of the mountains create a completely different vibe compared to city life.
But what really stood out was the thought that these same paths were once walked by warriors of the Maratha Empire. That feeling adds a different level of respect and connection to the place.
Exploring the Fort
Once at the top, Raigad Fort opens up into a vast historical site.
Some of the key places I explored:
-
Maha Darwaja (Main Entrance) – The grand gateway that still feels powerful
-
Raj Bhavan ruins – Where the royal court once functioned
-
Jagdishwar Temple – Peaceful and spiritually calming
-
Takmak Tok – A cliff point with breathtaking (and slightly scary) views
Every corner has a story, and even though much of the structure is now in ruins, the energy of the place is still alive.
A Moment at Shivaji Maharaj’s Samadhi
The most powerful moment of my visit was standing near the samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
There was a sense of pride, silence, and respect in the air. It’s not just a tourist spot—it’s an emotional experience, especially for anyone who knows even a little about Indian history.
Best Time to Visit Raigad Fort
From my experience, the best time to visit is:
-
Monsoon (June–September): Lush greenery, but slippery steps
-
Winter (October–February): Pleasant and ideal for trekking
I would recommend going early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Final Thoughts
My visit to Raigad Fort was not just a trip—it was a reminder of courage, vision, and history.
If you’re someone who enjoys travel with meaning, this is a place you should definitely visit at least once. It’s not just about the view at the top, but the journey, the history, and the feeling you carry back with you.
